All Over the Place... Ep. 105 - Resuscitating Sportsmanship (Livestream)
Remember when high school and youth sporting events allowed kids to be kids, and the sounds from the stands or sidelines pretty exclusively offered words of encouragement and cheers for the players, mixed with a little harmless peppering of the officials? I do ... and those days weren't all that long in the rearview.
This weekend on AOTP..., we address the issues surrounding how and why those not-so-distant memories have morphed into too many instances of derogatory and demeaning comments issued not only at the officials, but at and from the players and coaches as well, increasingly far too often words devolving into physical violence. Fortunately the panel also offers several solutions to get the pendulum swinging back towards an atmosphere of civility and good sportsmanship from everyone.
Dana Pappas, National Federation of High School Sports' Director of Officiating Services, and Arizona Canyon Athletic Association's Shannon Eastin, not only the NFL's first female referee, but also a longtime advocate of building communities through sports, join the conversation. You’ll also hear from a few friends of mine who, thanks to our time as umpires, referees, assigners etc., invest our time maintaining an atmosphere to make the games as enjoyable and safe as possible for the student-athletes and kids playing them.

In regards to parents and related to school ball I feel the AD needs to be more active and controlling their coaches and families

Unfortunately it’s sad that the kids could be impacted by parents poor behavior. I had to eject a parent in a game first inning as he was out of control and I started with the coach to have it addressed. It was and then vulgarity began and unfortunately had to eject. Then the coach came to me and said thank you. His child was nothing but focused on game and was one of the better players

Dana code of conduct would be great as hopefully it would calm those coaches and family members who are out of line.

Dana Families will mostly replicate the coach. Respectful coach, typically respectful families and unfortunately coaches who lack respect, you can almost anticipate families will follow

Eric If coach is loud enough I will warn immediately and not ignore as its important to nip it early in game so we maintain control as officials

Kevin makes a good point as we as umpires are not consistent with strict authority

Well said Shannon as I continue doing baseball and softball not for the money as it is the love of the game. Playing football, basketball and baseball for many years and coaching for just as many years for baseball and basketball I love being in the game and around the kids who coached for years
